Raising the Bar for Elder Abuse Research: Medline accepts JEAN

Kudos to Terry Fulmer, editor of the Journal of Elder Abuse & Neglect (JEAN), and members of her editorial board who successfully got JEAN included among the publications Medline indexes. Medline is the National Library of Medicine's searchable database of publications and is used by researchers, health care practitioners, educators, administrators and students around the world.

Medline takes its decision about what to include seriously. A Literature Selection Technical Review Committee meets three times a year and reviews approximately 140 titles at each meeting, deciding both what to add and what to drop. In considering publications, they look for those that provide the most comprehensive, important, original and valid coverage of the biomedical literature. The group also looks at the quality of the editorial work in terms of how well publications ensure objectivity, credibility, and the quality of their contents. That includes how they select articles, the peer review process, and ethical guidelines. Sponsorship by national or international professional societies is also considered. JEAN is the official publication of the National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse.

“JEAN has made substantial strides over the past decade and we can only hope to attract the attention of new investigators, clinicians and policymakers,” says Fulmer. “We’re thrilled to be in Medline and will capitalize on this distinction.”
