Financial Abuse

“ Some men rob you with a six-gun, others rob you with a fountain pen.” —Woody Guthrie

When musician Woody Guthrie penned these lyrics, he never could have imagined the weapons and schemes that crooks and financial predators now use, which include cell phones, powers of attorney, hand-held scanners, living trusts, and the Internet. How and why seniors are vulnerable to financial crimes, and what can be done about it, are primary concerns of Nerenberg’s whose activities in the area include the following:

  • Testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation at the hearing Fraud: Targeting America's Seniors. http://commerce.senate.gov/hearings/0804ner.pdf [PDF:15.3 kb]
  • Testified before the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging at the Elder Fraud and Abuse: New Challenges in the Digital Economy hearing.
  • Served as advisor to the Research Triangle Institute’s national study on elder financial exploitation sponsored by the Administration on Aging, DHHS.
